Why is Trident Called Trident?

March 16, 2018 by Chloie Parsons Leave a Comment

A lifetime ago, back when grades mattered and I had dreams of conquering the world, I had a five pack-a-day habit. Luckily, it was just a gum habit.

It’s a good thing that Trident was there to keep my teeth cavity free! Long before I was arouond, the American Chicle Company developed Trident in response to the discovery linking sugar to tooth decay. The first sugar free gum ever to be patented, Trident, became available in November 1964. The early 1960s brought us many things, but one of the breakthroughs in the food world was an artificial sweetener called xylitol. Xylitol, a sugar alcohol, combined with a gum base, flavoring, and three enzymes that fight against the formation of tartar, gave us the gum we know as Trident.

How Trident got its name

Today, Trident is the #1 selling gum in the world and is owned by Mondelez International. Trident, in a variety of flavors and with a variety of benefits, is available in over 70 countries under ‘sibling’ names, like Stimorol in the UK and Africa. Trident was the first gum in space (1964) and has been on every space mission since 1981.

Why is it Called Trident?

In its two syllables, Trident shows its Latin roots. The first syllable ‘Tri’ (three, as in three enzymes) combines with ‘dent’ (teeth) to give us Trident. Trident had developed three patented enzymes that fought against the buildup of tartar on teeth. They ran a powerfully swaying campaign in 1964 with the slogan, “The Great Taste That Is Good For Your Teeth.”

Trident has not changed their healthy teeth ethos. They have joined in the current trend to help keep teeth white with their Trident White line, in flavors such as Cool Rush, Peppermint, Spearmint, Wintergreen and Sparkling Mint. For those needing to build stronger teeth, they offer Trident Xtra Care with the tagline, “Strengthens & Rebuilds Teeth.” The strengthening formula is offered in Spearmint, Peppermint and Cool Mint. If you just like to get your gum chew on, they have a host of fruit and mint selections in various forms, like Trident Layers and Trident Splash, a filled gum that cleans teeth.

Trident is there with you during that long commute, those tedious exams, during the hike to the summit, and all life’s thrilling adventures. Where do you take your Trident? Comment below! Thanks for reading why is Trident called Trident! #whyisitcalledTrident
